Public Emergencies
Earthquake and fire drills are conducted regularly at school. In the event of a serious earthquake, the communication and transportation systems may be disrupted. All teachers, staff members, and students must remain at school until parents / guardians can safely come and pick up their children. If evacuation from the premises is necessary, the teachers and staff, together with the children will be evacuated to Miyamae Junior High School, a designated earthquake rescue center, or Toei Kami-Takaido Jutaku, a designated evacuation area.
Curriculum Guarantee in the Event of a Major Emergency
Under all circumstances A-JIS will endeavor to remain open to provide education for its students. However, it is recognized that there are situations e.g. heavy snow fall; typhoons that represent major emergencies that would necessitate school closure and represent disruption to student learning. The E.E.O or designated personnel will be responsible for decision making in this case. Teachers, staff, parents and students will be notified through the activation of school and class phone chains and via the school’s website as an emergency notice.
In the case of school closure due to a major emergency, the nature, level and duration of support for students will be determined by the administration. Once the school specifies the support parameters, the students who will be eligible are those who are continuing enrolment at A-JIS.
School Closure
The board recognizes that conditions may exist which may require the closure of the school. If, in the opinion of the board, a safety or security situation exists, then the board may decide to close the school on a temporary or indefinite basis.
While the health and safety of the employees is paramount, all decisions will be based on the most prudent use of the school’s financial resources. In such cases, the following guidelines related to employees will be in effect:
Temporary Closure
The head or designee is authorized to close the school for one day, delay the opening time of school, hold students in school past dismissal time, or dismiss school early if adverse weather conditions or emergency safety considerations make it necessary.
Closures projected to be more than one day, will require the approval of the board. In such cases the board, upon recommendation from the head, may authorize the Head to instruct employees to remain at home for safety reasons.
When, in the opinion of the Board, the emergency has passed and it is prudent to resume normal operations, all employees will be expected to return to Beijing and resume their duties. If an employee does not return as of the day that School resumes normal operation, the School may consider their contract no longer valid. In this case, the School will cancel any or all salary and benefits, including all end-of-contract benefits.
Indefinite Closure
However, should the board decide that conditions continue to exist that will not permit the safe re-opening of the school, then the school may be closed indefinitely. In the unlikely event of an indefinite closure, the school will provide termination benefits in accordance the school’s work regulation.
1.4031 Make Up of Emergency Closing Days
The board recognizes that from time to time the school will have to be closed for emergency reasons related to weather, natural disasters, etc. Should the total number of emergency closing days in a given school year exceed three days; the board will consider a revised annual calendar to minimize disruption to the instructional year.
