Graduate Placement
In recognizing Aoba-Japan
International School's Mission Statement and its Objectives as an
educational institution and a viable enterprise, the Placement Office
has a goal of assisting graduates and their parents in the selection of
appropriate secondary schools. Placement Team Members meet ninth
graders and their parents with the goal of facilitating the placement
process, particularly as it pertains to the orientation toward the
various steps leading to the selection of the high school that will best
meet the needs of the students. Counselling begins with eighth graders
for their preparation for ninth grade, and also assemblies with the
eighth grade parents are held to give them advanced information on the
placement process and procedures followed at A-JIS.
The following
takes place during the year to assist both the students and parents in
finding the best school:
- holding Round Table meetings in
September with the teachers of graduating students to have enough
information about each student
- meeting parents of
graduating students to discuss placement concerns
- involving
with student recruitment events to gather up-to-date information on
schools
- attending the TABS Fair held by the Association
of Boarding Schools in late October
- meeting with
admission officers of high schools in Japan and abroad
- meeting
with parents and the graduating students individually to assist them in
finding and deciding on appropriate schools
- giving
parents and graduating students assistance in filling out application
forms throughout the year
- preparing necessary documents
for application such as confidential teacher recommendations and
official transcripts
- administering practice interviews
for school admission and visa application to graduating students
- giving
information and advice to parents and graduating students on general
procedure after accepted by a school (I-20, visas, immunisations, etc.)
- meeting
parents of eighth grade students in April to give them advanced
information on placement after graduation
This process
gives both the students and their the best possible method of finding a
school that will continue the quality education that they would like for
their future.

Philosophy
"Learning in itself is a way of life"
We
at A-JIS are life long learners who have a responsibility to contribute
in our own individual ways to the emerging global society.
History
Mrs. Regina Rogers-Doi founded the school in 1976.
Her ideology in founding the school is aptly stated in this thought in
verse authored by her:
To look at ourselves
As ever growing entities.
To develop ourselves with
Sincerity and purity of mind
To open ourselves to new ideas;
To respectfully acknowledge
The ideas of others
And from this, be able to grow
In knowledge and humanity.
From this we’ll be able to
Contribute to the emerging
Global world.
And the new order of things.
Aoba
International School, comprised of nursery, kindergarten, pre-first
grade classes was founded in 1976 with approximately 20 children in a
small house near Daikanyama station, with the purpose of providing a
four-year bilingual oriented pre-first grade education. The school
primarily catered for Japanese children, providing students with
English-language foundations necessary to succeed within international
schools. Shortly after establishment, the kindergarten moved to the
site of the current Meguro Campus, adjacent to Saigoyama Park.
The
success of Aoba International School within the international and
Japanese community resulted in a parent requests for the opening of an
elementary and junior high school and with the help of parents, in 1980 Japan International School was founded by Mrs. Doi-Rogers. Japan
International School was originally located near Daikanyama Station on
the Toyoko Line, close to Aoba International School. As enrollment
expanded, the school moved three times: first to Harajuku, then to
Shibuya, and finally in 1992 at the present location in Suginami Ward.
There A-JIS occupies an attractive building purpose-built for use of
the school.
As
the school facilities improved, acknowledgement as a quality
educational institution has been received both domestically and
internationally. As a matter of course, the school earned its first
international accreditation with the European Council of International
Schools (ECIS) and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges
(NEASC) in 1996. In order to streamline educational
and administrative operations from kindergarten through to middle school, the two campuses officially became one organization in 1998 under the name Aoba-Japan International School. The combined enrollment of the two campuses has grown to the present enrollment of 400 students.
